BONORONG WILDLIFE SANCTUARY

A few days ago, my family and I got the chance to go visit the Bonorong Wildlife Sanctuary. At the sanctuary, we saw all sorts of cool animals, including kookaburras, Tasmanian devils, wombats, cockatoos, and my personal favorite, kangaroos.

We had the opportunity to feed the kangaroos. Because of stereotypes, I imagined kangaroos to be hyperactive. I thought they would all be frantically crowding around me to get food, but they were surprisingly calm and gentle, and came up one at a time, no pushing or shoving involved. They would sniff our hands to make sure they could trust us. The kangaroos would nibble on the food so lightly, it almost tickled.

I also learned a lot about kangaroos. One fun fact is that only female kangaroos have pouches. When they are joeys, they do not have pouches; they develop with their growth. Eventually, they have babies and the little joeys live in the pouch for about a month until they are too big to fit inside. They even go to the bathroom in the pouch! And then the moms clean it out by licking it clean. EW!

All in all, it was a really cool experience and Iā€™m so glad we could do it.

THE END!
