A DAY IN BICHENO
On Thursday, my family and I drove from Hobart to Bicheno, an adorable town on the east coast of Tasmania. We had one full day here on Friday, and we were ready to make the most of it, but it was pouring rain on Friday morning. It actually worked out well because we caught up on schoolwork in the morning, and were ready to venture out in the afternoon when the skies were clear.
For lunch, we went to the Lobster Shack, a restaurant that specializes in fresh, premium seafood. It is located right on the water, giving us amazing views of Governors Island while we ate. Of course, I got a lobster roll. IT WAS SO GOOD! This lobster roll was different from the one Iām used to, but still delectable. Their sweet and tangy sauce tasted excellent with the fresh lobster meat.
After our delicious lunch, we went to Wineglass Bay, located in Freycinet National Park, overlooking the Tasman Sea. When we started our hike it was still gray, chilly and a little rainy, but we knew the hike was going to be good when we spotted a wallaby with a joey at the trailhead! As we hiked up the mountain, we started to take off all our layers and jackets. The hike itself was relatively short but very steep in some parts. When we got to the top the views were astonishing! The unimaginably blue waters were breathtaking. The hills just rolled as far as the eye could see, and you could hear the echo of the waves crashing far below.
After we ended our hike at Wineglass Bay we went back to Bicheno to do another short hike at the Whalers Lookout. The Whalers Lookout is what you might imagine! Long ago, whalers would come here to look for migrating whales along the coast. You could see for miles and miles. An interesting fact about the Whalers Lookout is that they used a certain tree to signal the whalers down below if there was a whale passing by. They would put up a red flag or cloth on the treetop, and people in their boats knew to start hunting. When you go to the lookout, sometimes you can see passing whales or dolphins, but unfortunately we did not because it is not the whale migration season now (winter/spring).
Our time in Bicheno started with gray skies and lots of rain, but ended up being a delightful stay with blue skies and lots of sun. š
