THAI BOOK CLUB: group 1

For our Thailand Book Club, Harper and I read three books: All Thirteen, The Last Mapmaker, and Girl on The Verge. These books are all very different from each other, from the genres to the plots.

ALL THIRTEEN

The first book we read was definitely my favorite: All Thirteen: The Incredible Cave Rescue of the Thai Boys Soccer Team by Christina Soontornvat. I heard about this TRUE STORY before, but I never got into the details. This book is amazing. It is great for any reading level. I didn’t want to put it down! It was gripping and very informative, and I was always on the edge of my seat. After we finished reading the book, we watched The Trapped Thirteen, a documentary that tells their story. There are quite a few movies about this rescue, and I plan to try and watch all of them soon! This book is highly, highly, recommended for all ages.

THE LAST MAPMAKER

The Last Mapmaker is also an award-winning book by Christina Soontornvat. Although this is the same author as All Thirteen, these two books are very different from each other. The Last Mapmaker is a fantasy book, in which the main character Sai goes on a boat journey to find dragons and other mythical creatures in mysterious islands in Thailand.

Both Harper and I started to read it, but then stopped because fantasy isn’t our favorite genre…

GIRL ON THE VERGE

Our third book is Girl On The Verge by Pintip Dunn. The main character, Kan, a Thai-American girl, lives in a predominantly white town in Kansas. We thought this book would be about Thai culture but it is really about a murder mystery that turns very dark at the end of the book. Harper and I really liked it, but it doesn’t really have much to do with Thailand!

These books were all different from each other and different from all the other books we’ve read in our book club! I liked some more than others, but they are all good books. And have I mentioned that All Thirteen is a must read for everybody?!
