ROAD TRIP: DAYS 12 - 14

The final days of our New Zealand road trip were spent in Christchurch — and oh man! — what a wonderful way to end this leg of our journey.

Christchurch suffered two catastrophic earthquakes in 2010 and 2011. Buildings were severely damaged or completely collapsed, the city’s infrastructure was totally upended, resulting in the loss of clean drinking water and impassable roads. They have spent the last decade reimagining and rebuilding and restoring their beloved city.

We visited Quake City, a museum dedicated to telling the heartbreaking stories from the earthquakes and highlighting how the greater community came together to help one another, and continue to do so today.

We took a Street Art Walking Tour, and learned that soon after Christchurch was turned to piles of rubble and devastation, street artists began painting colorful pieces throughout the city, showing how art heals, instills hope, and breathes new life into a community after unthinkable tragedy.

As part of the tour, we stopped at the Dance O Mat, a space where you can connect to speakers via Bluetooth to play your favorite song and invite friends to dance.

I dare you to do this without experiencing immense joy. This installation (as part of the Gap Filler initiative) brings happiness and community to an otherwise forgotten lot.

We hopped on and off the city tram for a full day, exploring new districts, quaint laneways, the botanic garden, and Riverside Market with delicious food and live performances.

It is safe to say that the Noonans LOVE Christchurch. It’s a small city with a HUGE heart, and we felt quite at home for the few days we were lucky enough to be here. We can’t wait to come back.
