ROAD TRIP: DAY 2

On our second day of driving around New Zealand, we left Haast early in the morning and drove straight to Franz Josef. Franz Josef Glacier and Fox Glacier are very famous and are supposed to look spectacular. Unfortunately, when we arrived it was cloudy so we could not see the glaciers. Beneath is a picture of what it's supposed to look like versus our picture of what we saw.

We drove to Lake Matheson, a small lake with a walking trail around it. First we warmed our bodies up with creamy soup at the cafe near the lake, and then we set off on our walk. One disappointing part of this walk was that there was supposed to be a part of a lake that was a reflecting pool of the glaciers. We didn't get to see the reflection but the landscape was astounding. Here is another photo of what the reflecting lake is supposed to look like versus what ours looked like.

But then… it started HAILING. It was crazy. We were running and the hail was pounding down on us. Seriously! Why does this always happen when we just wanna see something gorgeous and take some photos, but somehow we end up soaking wet?!

Later that afternoon, we checked into our airbnb, which just happened to be located on a miniature horse farm. The ponies were right next to us and we enjoyed feeding them.

During dinner, the skies let up for a split second and we were able to get a view of the glaciers from our front porch. They just looked magical. We finally got a view after a cloudy but wonderful day!
