Fitzroy Island
On Tuesday, we went to Fitzroy Island, one of the most famous islands in the Great Barrier Reef with a wide range of wildlife found in the flourishing coral reefs. We did get off to a bad start because our stinger suits weren’t fitting us right, Harper’s snorkel was missing a piece, and most of us woke up on the wrong side of the bed…So yeah! But once we got in the water, everything was better!
The main (and really only!) thing we did on Fitzroy Island was snorkel. We got on the water and stayed in for almost 2 hours! We saw many of the same fish as before, but this time we got to get up close and there were many more schools of fish. We saw a blue spotted stingray really quickly, as it swam past us super fast!
What I noticed is that all of the coral here is so colorful; it seemed to me that there was more color here than in the other part of the reef we explored the day before. Here the water was also comparatively more shallow so we got to duck dive, which I personally love!
One of my favorite parts of this day is when we saw a green sea turtle and a loggerhead sea turtle! Sea turtles are my favorite animal and I’m so glad I got to see TWO in the Great Barrier Reef! We swam next to them for a while and got really close! The turtles didn’t mind us being there and they were so calm. They just stayed in the same spot the whole time, eating and occasionally coming up to the surface to get some air.
We had an amazing last day in Australia. We were able to enjoy the reef for the last time, with all of the beautiful animals in it. I am going to miss Australia so much and I enjoyed every minute of being in this beautiful country – from when we first arrived in Sydney to when I swam with sea turtles in the Great Barrier Reef!! I can’t wait to come back soon!
