Lune vs. American DOUGHNUT KITCHEN
While in Melbourne, we were lucky enough to go to Lune Croissanterie and The American Doughnut. Both are locally owned, even though names can be deceiving!
The Lune Croissanterie is – well, I bet you can guess – a place that bakes delicious croissants. Yup. You got it right. We learned about the Lune Croissanterie online as it was one of the top places to go in Melbourne. Their reputation is that they are very scientific in their baking approach. Each of their baked goods have a different method for baking, one of which requires 3 days!
When we got there, we could immediately tell that it was a very popular place. There was a line snaking out the door and around the block. When we got inside it was very modern, with stone walls, floors, and ceilings. The place itself was very small, but you were able to see the bakers making the croissants, which was very interesting! This time the view was definitely worth the climb. We ordered a pan au chocolate, croissant, lemon cruffin, morning bun, and a ham and cheese croissant. Everything was delicious. The lemon cruffins were just the right amount of tangy and sweetness and the morning bun was zesty and sugary at the same time.
Ok - so a few posts ago I thought I had tried the best jelly donut ever. But I was so wrong. The American Doughnut did not have a huge reputation – just that you go there for doughnuts, and that's that. We arrived at the American Doughnut, a little trailer located in The Queen Victoria Market, with all its windows open so we could see the doughnuts being made. I enjoyed looking at the jelly being pumped into the doughnut. Like Lune, this place also had a long line. We hopped in line and when we got to the window, we knew what we wanted. Well, actually, there was only one option for what to get! We ordered 5 jelly donuts and then sat down to devour them.
All in all, I loved both of these places. They both were “absolutely delectable,” to quote Reese, and of course, filled with all the sugar you can imagine! To be honest, I would usually pick a donut over a croissant. As much as I loved the croissants, I liked the jelly donut better. I never knew heaven was a thing until I met this donut. The dough was buttery soft and the jelly was perfectly sweet and tart.
If you ever go to Melbourne you absolutely HAVE to go to both of these places!
