SURFING IN SEMINYAK

Remember our blog post about surfing in Australia? If not, you should probably read this blog post about our time surfing in Australia before you read this post because then I think that this whole post will make a little more sense!! 😉

We decided to try surfing again in Seminyak, Bali. We walked onto the beach being ready for anything… This time, it was so much better!!!

In this post, I write about it using the same criteria as last time: instructors, conditions, and the actual lesson. You will see how different this experience was than the one in Australia with Tony!

Instructors

Unlike our surfing lesson in Australia in which the three of us shared one instructor, in Bali, we each got our own instructor! I was paired with Roni, Reese was with Alex, and Harper went with Frances. They were all incredible! They were each so enthusiastic and optimistic, but most importantly, their style of teaching was not like Tony’s!

After we caught a wave and paddled back to them, they would always tell us what to work on and be super encouraging about it. One of the things I loved most about these guys is that when we would catch a wave they would sing songs from Frozen and Sing 2 and tell us to make kissy lips and peace signs when we rode the wave in!

They always pushed us to do our best and Roni even pushed me into really big unbreaking waves because…you never know if you never try, right?!

Conditions

Although it is the rainy season in Bali, the weather was perfect for surfing! There were sunny skies with few clouds and the water was very warm. There was not a strong current and the waves were predictable so we could surf without getting smothered by gigantic waves. Although those big waves were intimidating, we were able to avoid them and stay safe.

The Actual Lesson

Because we had already had one surfing lesson, we only had a brief session on the sand in which they reminded us of the basic stances and rules of surfing. We then headed into the water! Because we each had our own instructors, we always had individual help and personal feedback whenever we needed it.

We had a GREAT surfing experience in Seminyak. I like to be taught in a compassionate, encouraging way, and I prefer to have a one-on-one instructor for more individualized help. Because of this experience, I now love surfing and I hope I can do it again during our travels!
