HAWKER STATIONS
One thing that everybody told us to do in Singapore was to eat at hawker stations to enjoy street food. The open air buildings have many varieties of food and drink, ranging from Indian to Chinese to local food and many different types of juices. We ended up going to three different stalls, Lau Pa Sat and Maxwell, two of the most famous that have been featured on TV shows, and Market Street Centre, one of the newer hawker stations.
Some of the most famous Singaporean foods and drinks are chicken satay, chicken rice, chicken rice curry, and sugarcane juice. At Lau Pa Sat, one area is called Satay Street. During the day, this is an actual street, but after dark it is closed off to traffic and transformed into Satay Street! We ordered chicken satay and shrimp satay and they were both delicious! Then we tried Chicken Rice. This dish is as simple as it sounds!! It is just roasted or steamed chicken in rice, delectable and classic! Almost a brother to Chicken Rice, Chicken Rice Curry is spicy and a little more complicated. The last thing we tried was sugarcane juice, one of the most popular drinks in Singapore. The way to make it is interesting: you take sugarcane and put it through what looks like a pasta making machine multiple times, and in the process, all of the juice is squeezed out. Now, I have a VERY big sweet tooth and I will eat and try anything sweet, but this was incredibly sweet. It was straight up sugar!
Hawker stands were something I had never experienced before, and I loved them! It had something for everybody and it was a great way to eat like the locals!
