Quinceañeras

When we went on our tour of the Centro Historico, we walked past many stores on a street called República de Chile that were selling beautiful dresses. Our guide taught us about quinceañeras, which are celebrations of girls’ 15th birthdays that usually include a mass and a party.

For a quinceañera, you have to get pretty fancy. Girls will get colorful gowns and tiaras. Boys will wear suits and spend a month or two getting ready to dance with the girls. 

In order to have a quinceañera, you have to get sponsors for the party. Your party sponsors will most likely be neighbors. Our guide told us they can say either “yes” or “yes” when you ask them. So if you tell them to bring food, they will bring food. 

The last thing that I learned about quinceañeras is that boys do not have them. Yes, they will dance with the girls at their quinceañeras, but they do not have their own.
